Pennington Island Cruise

Trip Overview
On a beautiful, sunny, 70 degree spring day I decided to cruise around Pennington Island from the Tinicum Park boat launch. The launch is at the very southern tip of the 1 mile island, so I paddled north along the narrow inland waterway. The view was stunning with calm water and tall green trees overhanging the waters on both sides. There was little current, so even though I was paddling upstream, it was constant but easy. The journey was slow and beautiful with filtered sun - everything I was hoping for. When I reached the northern tip there was some natural debris blocking easy access around the island. I had to stop and carry the kayak a short distance to the open Delaware River. Once there, I had a great view of the Frenchtown Bridge. The return journey was very easy, for I was now traveling with the current. I was on the wide open water of the great Delaware River. Compared to the inland waterway, it was, at first, a bit intimidating. But with the warm sun in my face and a cool breeze it was a pleasure. The end of the island was reached so quickly disappointment set in. I wanted to complete the trip again! But time didn't allow for it. This is an easy, quick, highly-recommended, 2 mile cruise.Safety Notes

Calm. Low current. Sunny. 70 degrees.Portage Notes
There is no parking at the boat launch itself. You must unload there and park directly across River Road (Route 32) at Tinicum Park. The inland water is shallow at times. ~3/4 mile north there is a concrete road that crosses from the mainland to the island. During low water boats must be carried over this obstacle and placed back in the water 50 feet north. Pennington Island is privately owned by a religious group, so it is strictly off limits to the general public.Trip Details
