Dillon Falls trailhead

Deschutes River

Description

Requires forest service day/year pass. There is a fee station on the way in. Easy launch into gentle water that has a current ~ 2 mph and you can easily and safely test in the initial calm launch area whether you are up for sustained paddling upstream. (Upstream paddling only from this location. Downstream == death via falls.) Paddle up to Slough Day Use Area. On the left on the way is a meadow marsh with a narrow entrance. On the right is a popular rope swing. Upstream about 10-15 minutes beyond Slough is a view of very turbulent water far ahead--remnants of Benham Falls, which is several river bends beyond that. Enjoy a float back down to Dillon Falls. Hey, when you see the first lefthand warning sign of falls 1/4 mile ahead, move over to the left shore and you will be fine.
