As I look out through the large window in front of my computer desk, I see the sun peeking out from behind the many rain clouds, smoke coming out from my neighbors chimney... All these signs are my indicators that I need to begin winterizing. Winterizing is different for everyone depending on where you live and how you choose to spend your winters.

Take yourself to the gym and do weight training, focusing on muscle groups like your back, shoulders, and abdomen. Incorporate yoga for increased flexibility, and try pilates to help strengthen your core and improve your balance on the water. Find an indoor pool to swim in during the winter or a rowing machine you can use. Try to take a trip somewhere where you can paddle, or do some winter paddling.

Before you get in the water, make sure you have the most important piece of safety gear - a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Life jackets work only when you wear them, and the law requires you to have one for every person in every boat. Test your knowledge with the Life Jacket Quiz to be sure you know your basics!
